The World of the Spanish Mystics
The flowering of the Spanish mystical tradition in the 16th
century is one of the most remarkable features of the period, but it did
not come out of nowhere. In this course we shall focus on the teachings
of Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross as expressed in their
principal works. But we shall also look at it in the context of their
own times and of the traditions they themselves inherited, which
stretched back into the older Spain of uneasy coexistence with Judaism
and Islam. Led by Colin Thompson.
